Wednesday Wishlist: Plenty of Room on the Bookshelf

Another one-item wishlist this week:

When Kindles first made their debut, I scoffed at the idea of not being able to turn pages, or feel the weight of a book in your hands. But there's no getting around it -- these things are pretty cool. I'll always prefer actual books over their electronic counterpart, but I certainly wouldn't mind giving the Kindle a place on my bookshelf this year.

Do you use a Kindle, Nook or any sort of e-reader?

Wednesday Wishlist: Bootstrap's Bootstrap

Anyone know which movie inspired my title?

Another simple wishlist this week, but this one comes with a story. A few weeks before Christmas, I headed to TJ Maxx with high hopes of finding some boots that would go with a range of outfits. If any of you have ever been to a store like TJ Maxx or Marshall's, you know that it's often a hit or miss. That's why I was surprised that less than five minutes into the shopping trip, I spotted a pair of tall suede boots in a gorgeous taupe color -- a muddy grey shade that's perfect for a variety of color palettes. The wedge heel was a bit taller than I wanted, but I was willing to overlook this provided the price was right.

I liked them even more after trying them on, but noticed the price tag had been scraped off the bottom of the right shoe. I asked an employee for help and waited patiently as she went to the register for a price check. You know where this is going...

She came around the corner a few minutes later and with a hopeful glance, I listened as she said "They're $19.99. We added a new price tag...Do you still want them?" I glazed over the fact that she hesitated as she asked that last question. "Yes, thanks so much," I said with a sigh of relief. Wow, only $20 for boots -- and these seem like they're good quality too, I thought. After she walked away, something prompted me to look again -- to double check this "too good to be true" scenario. I flipped the shoe over, and the red sticker on the bottom contained a bold $99.99 written in black marker. I misheard her -- simple as that. But it still hurt a little to place them back on the shelf. Considering the original retail price (~$150), they were a good deal -- just not a great enough deal to fit within our budget. Hey, one day I'll be able to afford a pair in each color. But until then, these beauties remain proudly on my wishlist. =)

Wednesday Wishlist: Bubble Bath

I rarely take bubble baths, as it's a luxury for which I often don't have time. But this year, I'm resolving to indulge a little. Here's what's on my bathtime wishlist:

Anything and everything from Lush - the bath bombs and solid shampoos have proved to be my favorite so far.

Bamboo Bathtub Caddy - the perfect accessory to a good book, a couple of candles and a glass of Cupcake Red Velvet.

And there you have it - my simple wishlist for a remarkably luxurious soak in the tub. If you don't feel relaxed after a bath like this, you may need to try it weekly to improve results. ;-)

What's are some ways you unwind?

Wednesday Wishlist: Kitchen Whimsy

Keeping up the Wednesday tradition, this time with a focus on my kitchen -- which is currently very small. And very messy. But we won't go into that. Here's what's on my wishlist this week:

Etsy (janethillstudio) - "The Magic Spice Cake" print. This would look both inspiring and delicious if framed and hung beside our table.

Amazon - Vegetable Spiralizer. Perfect for raw zucchini pasta, for which I currently use a vegetable peeler. I like to argue that this is a practical purchase, although it probably isn't. Here's to wishful thinking. ;)

Amazon - Rainbow Whisk. Both whisks and wooden spoons are so reminiscent of classic, comforting, "grandmotherly" baking that having such a fun one is almost like an ode of respect.

Williams-Sonoma: Cast Iron Skillet. The possibilities are endless with such a classic cookware item, and I can certainly see it lasting for years. Maybe we'll make this wish a reality this weekend. =)

Amazon - Ice Cream Scoop. Something tells me this is probably cheaply made. But it's painfully cute and matches a couple of spoons I have, so it remains on the list proudly!

ModCloth - Sugar Baby Cookbook. This is less an addition to my kitchen and more an addition to my bookshelf. =)

Does your kitchen have a theme? I attempted a tastefully done cupcake theme (I've seen it done poorly), but the space seems too small to accommodate this. Perhaps it's a upcoming project for the blog?

Wednesday Wishlist: Comfort is Key

After a client meeting took me an hour and a half out of town today, I'm exhausted -- the day only redeemed by the grilled cheese sandwich I had for dinner and the subtle softness of an old sweatshirt. It's not often that my job takes me out of my home office -- and while I love to dress up and discuss business over sushi -- I'll always cherish the comfort of my PJ's and a simple meal at home. In fact, comfort is the theme of today's post. Here are some pieces I'd love to add to my collection:

Forever 21 - Purl Knit Scarf. This is much prettier in person, especially because of the shimmering thread running throughout.

H&M - Poncho. I think this might make its way into my closet this weekend. After all, it looks incredibly warm and a little bit like a blanket of chocolate. I'm sold.

Mod Cloth - Academy Days Dress. This works as something you can slip on without thought. But if you did put some thought into it, pairing it with boots/tights could look equally as lovely as a pair of nude heels.

Etsy (PetiteTenderness) - Cable Knit Coffee Cozy. Couldn't help but add this -- it's the perfect accessory to a cup of hot chocolate. I'm swooning over the cuteness.

Wednesday Wishlist: The Intro

As Sean and I sat down to watch the first DVD in Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University, I waved goodbye to the glamorous, diamond-studded life I once led and begrudgingly greeted a life of top ramen and empty wallets. It was quite an upsetting experience. Joanna, I know you feel my pain.

Ok...so it didn't exactly pan out like that. I'm hardly glamorous; and we are NOT resorting to top ramen. But I am a little nervous going into this thing. My nervousness, however, seems to be laced with an enthusiasm that I didn't expect. Dave Ramsey's "live like no one else, so you can LIVE like no one else" quote -- albeit irritating -- kind of makes sense.

And while the guy definitely knows what he's talking about, I do think its important to make the plan your own. Not to bend the rules so you can still buy stuff you don't need, but to remain flexible in your plan while still moving forward with "gazelle-like intensity" (another annoying phrase of his). I'll have you know that I'm neither a gazelle nor a natural saver, but we did just  pay off two credit cards. And our only remaining debt is the car. See, we're not just in it to get rich and buy stuff. Sean and I are both passionate about using our (future) wealth to benefit other people. Hey, you need help paying your kids' college tuition? We've got it covered. Your charity needs more funds? No problem. You want to take your family to Disneyland? We'll take care of it. Now that's what motivates me most of all. There is, however, a time and place for "stuff," and that's where the Swift as Shadows Wednesday Wishlist comes in. Every Wednesday starting next week, I'll feature a few things I've got my eye on -- from clothes to kitchen gadgets to books to tech tools.

What motivates you to save money?
